WRI, representing Rutgers, lead a partnership with five not-for-profit organizations; built around common interest among Rutgers, North Camden community organizations and the North Camden community. The focus on physical improvements through stabilization and greening within the connecting corridors between Rutgers and North Camden was important. It represented meaningful civic engagement between campus and community around a common set of concerns. The planning and greening initiative created meaningful opportunities for civic engagement to improve quality of life, enhanced neighborhood interactions, and increased recreational and social opportunities and sustainable community development.

The interactions of this project promoted the stabilization of vacant land in the Camdentowne section of North Camden. To pursue these objectives, the Landscape Architecture Department at Rutgers, New Brunswick, with direction from the residents, campus representatives and North Camden Greening Committee, redesigned the streetscape and pedestrian tunnels connecting Rutgers and North Camden.
